Instrumentation Engineer
Research
The Plant Growth Core Lab at KAUST is undergoing a rapid and exciting expansion to support the increasing needs of our scientific community, hence we are looking for an Instrumentation Engineer to join our team.
The incumbent will provide technical and engineering expertise that will drive best practices in performances of existing equipment including implementing new advanced research instrumentation.
Predominately he will be based in the Plant Growth room, but his activity will also span across Greenhouse and Field Testing Station in supporting equipment needs and maintenance activities.
Provide technical support across all research equipment in the facilities.
Develop preventative and corrective maintenance plans working closely with KAUST Lab Equipment Maintenance (LEM) teams.
Support the Manager by establishing vendor relations plans to assess current install base performances and suitability, including recommending new suppliers.
Support the faculty and researchers with new proposals for equipment trials including sourcing, installing and testing.
Monitor and report on current equipment utilization and other KPIs, taking appropriate action for underperformers and downtime of equipment.
Ensure all equipment is actively documented and recorded in the Core Labs asset register and ensure capital replacement and upgrade plans are reviewed annually.
Review technical documentation for key equipment across the facility, and ensure suitable level operating procedures are updated and reviewed for
Responsible for operation, maintenance and training of staff and users on the advanced plant phenotyping equipment
Responsible for performances of plant growth chambers including overseeing the experimental conditions like temperate humidity, photoperiod, etc.
Ensure suitable maintenance and back-up plans are in place for all growth chambers and freezers in the plant growth facility
Responsible for Laboratory Management System in coordination with Core Labs central office in areas of usage, reporting and user charges
Work closely with KAUST utilities and Engineering Project teams for planning and implementing any lab modification works
Work closely with other Core Labs such as Central workshops to leverage expertise in electronics, control systems and design in supporting the facility
Research
Core Labs
Minimum 5 years of experience in a similar role
Preference will be given to those work experience in any research organizations.
Proven experience with technical oversight of equipment
Demonstrated knowledge of maintenance and equipment performance planning
Experience with equipment trials and installations including training of others
Ability to troubleshoot and fault find with diverse equipment installations
Ability to understand and translate researcher needs into technical solutions
Strong desire and passion to implement best practices in equipment operations
Ability to adapt to and shift priorities, and effectively perform under pressure when required
Proficiency with office software tools, MS Excel, Access or other
Ability to work both independently and with others from a variety of cultural backgrounds
Self-learner, pro-active with demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
Excellent communicator with ability to interact well with research communities
Capable developing and maintaining cross departmental relationships.
Excellent command of English (reading, writing and speaking)
Strong attention to detail essential
Bachelor’s in Engineering such as Instrumentation, Controls, Mechanical, Electrical or Maintenance
Minimum 5 years of experience in a similar role

Staff Scientist – Etching
Research
KAUST Nanofabrication Core Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory supporting research in Micro- and Nanofabrication and Microfluidics.
The Cleanroom Staff Scientist provides specialized support in training users, operating and maintaining the equipment used by many KAUST student and professional researchers and external users in the preparation of structures and devices or their component advanced materials.
He / She will work with a team of scientists and technical staff to help ensure an uninterrupted, high-standard of experimental research.
Oversee equipment availability and utilization, order spare parts and consumables, plan preventive maintenance. Supports KAUST colleagues, students, post-docs, faculty, other scientists and staff or external users by coordinating, scheduling and completing regular training on assigned instruments, as well as help with special projects and experimental design;
Work with faculty and students, create opportunities to enhance technical operations or content through expansion of existing efforts or development of new efforts;
Provide strong technical support to users for material deposition and sample characterization;
Train users in the effective use of dry etching equipment;
Standardize the procedures for equipment operation;
Develop new processes and procedures to meet specific user’s research needs;
Optimize the process parameters;
Maintain proper and complete equipment operations and maintenance records;
Ensure User compliance with Badger instrument control software policy;
Identifies problems and related technical issues, communicate and work with lab equipment engineers and
on-site, off-site and international technical teams / specialists, vendors, etc. to solve equipment issues and ensure the proper operation and repair, both preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments;;
Work as a backup for some other preparation and characterization tools in the lab.
Contribute to the efforts to making the lab a high standard and safe work place for staff and users
Research
Core Labs
Familiar with Cleanroom operations and procedures;
Experience in troubleshooting and repairing equipment;
Experience and knowledge of metrology tools such as optical/electrical methods;
Familiar with Cleanroom standards and procedures;
Experience in working in international, multicultural environment
Plan and organize vendor visits, workshops and seminars;
Research and advise on equipment replacement and upgrades;
Help ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations and with Cleanroom standard and procedures;
Participate in lab organization and upkeep efforts;
Attend professional and safety meetings.
Perform some other operational and administrative duties in the lab as required to assure smooth and safe operations.
Ph.D. degree in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science or Engineering
Demonstrated expertise and more than 5 years of experience in dry etching equipment and process;
5 plus years’ experience with working in the Cleanroom in processing of semiconductor materials and devices
